How Often Should You Clean Windows Near the Ocean? A South Bay Guide
The national rule of thumb — clean windows twice a year — doesn't hold up a block from the beach. Between salt spray, marine layer haze, and Santa Ana dust a few times a year, South Bay glass collects grime faster than an inland home ever will. The South Bay schedule
For most coastal South Bay homes, the right schedule is three touches per year: a full interior + exterior clean in spring, an exterior-only wash in late summer, and an interior refresh before the holidays. Homes a few blocks inland — Torrance, Gardena, Lomita — often do fine with two.
Why coastal homes are different
Three things speed up how quickly South Bay glass gets dirty:
- Salt spray. Ocean air carries fine salt that lands on glass and slowly forms a hazy film, worst on west and south-facing windows.
- Marine layer. The morning haze rolling in off the coast leaves mineral residue behind as it evaporates.
- Santa Ana winds. A few times a year, dry offshore winds push dust from inland canyons all the way to the coast.
Season by season
Spring (Feb–April)
Best time for a full interior + exterior deep clean, clearing winter grime before summer sun bakes it on.
Summer (June–Aug)
Peak salt-spray season near the beach cities. An exterior refresh keeps ocean-view glass from hazing over during the season you'll actually be looking through it.
Fall (Sept–Nov)
Santa Ana wind events pick up. A post-wind exterior wash clears dust before it settles into tracks and screens.
Winter (Dec–Jan)
Interior refresh only. Lower sun angle exposes smudges that hide most of the year — good timing before holiday guests.

- A hazy or salty film on the outside of the pane that doesn't wipe off with a cloth.
- Visible dust film that stays after a light rinse.
- Screens that look darker than they should — pull one out and hold it to the light.
- Marine-layer streaks that dry into faint white lines near the coast.
